T-shirt-wearing passengers claim ‘sexist’ flight attendant kicked them off Spirit Airlines plane: ‘Treated like a criminal’

They didn’t appreciate the so-called in-flight fashion policing.

Two female passengers have accused a Spirit Airlines flight attendant of sexism after he allegedly kicked them off the plane for their choice of clothing, as seen in a viral Instagram video.

“It’s just humiliating to be socialized and treated like a criminal just because we were wearing T-shirts,” one of the flyers, named Tara, told the Daily Mail as she detailed the alleged T-shirt arrest.

She and her friend Teresa were flying from Los Angeles to New Orleans to celebrate the former’s birthday when the crew member singled them out.

The pair had reportedly boarded the plane in trousers and sweaters but took them off to freshen up, prompting a flight attendant to chastise them for their choice of runway attire.

“We were harassed by a male flight attendant who told us to cover up because we were wearing T-shirts,” Teresa wrote.

Things reportedly got heated after Tara asked the alleged sartorial custodian what policy they had violated.

A video of the scuffle shows flight attendants telling the couple to turn off the camera as they protest their alleged regret. Spirit-ed treatment.

“There’s nothing that says you can’t wear a chunky top,” one of the duo quips in the clip. “Just chill.”

“I don’t understand what the problem is,” says another.

At one point, a fellow traveler declares “a business can’t treat people this way.”

Teresa wrote in the caption that “everyone else (including the flight staff) agreed though that there was nothing wrong with what we were wearing and that t-shirts are not against their dress code.”

However, they claimed that crew members scolded passengers who tried to stand up for them, including a lady with a small child.

Eventually, the situation escalated to the point where the flyers were removed from the plane without refund.

“Then he continued to treat us badly and did not give us any reason why he wanted to leave us,” wrote Teresa. “Other passengers joined in and tried to defend us, but in the end a supervisor lied to us and said either we were off the flight or she was going to bring the police.”

she added. “She told us she would rebook our flight and then as soon as she got off the plane she said there were no flights and also refused a refund.”

As a result, travelers had to pay over $1,000 to book a new flight on another airline.

“This is terrible service, in 2024 we’re being kicked off a plane for ONE FEMALE flight attendant who doesn’t like our shirt,” Teresa fumed. “Everyone who works at the airport agreed that this was an act of prejudice, discrimination and misogyny and that we should take legal action. We spoke to the police, who said the same thing.”

Tara and Teresa have since contacted Spirit about the fashion outfit, but have not heard back.

According to the airline’s contract of carriage, a passenger can be asked to leave the plane if he is “dressed inappropriately” or if his clothing is “obscene, obscene or offensive in nature.”

However, the pair claimed they contacted an airline representative who told them they were not in breach of the budget carrier’s sartorial standards.

“We called Spirit support and they even said there’s nothing against T-shirts in their dress code,” insisted Tara.
